Montevideo's Carrasco International Airport connects directly with multiple destinations across Latin America, the United States, and Europe. Travelers from cities without direct flights can easily reach Montevideo through connecting flights via major hubs, primarily within South America.
Another practical route is to fly into Buenos Aires' Aeroparque International Airport and proceed to Montevideo. Travelers can choose between flying, taking a direct ferry, or opting for a ferry-bus combination. Below is an overview to help determine the most suitable travel option:
For those seeking a straightforward journey, the direct ferry is a great option. Buquebus operates two daily trips, with each journey lasting around 2 hours and 45 minutes. The high-speed ferry, named Francisco in honor of the Pope, can accommodate 1,000 passengers and 200 vehicles, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h (over 60 mph). Departing from Buenos Aires' port, conveniently near Aeroparque Airport, the ferry arrives directly at Montevideo’s central port.
Budget-conscious travelers may prefer the ferry-bus combo, offered by Buquebus and Colonia Express. This route includes a one-hour ferry ride to Colonia del Sacramento, followed by a bus transfer to Montevideo, totaling approximately 4.5 to 5 hours of travel time. For those interested in sightseeing, stopping in Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is highly recommended. However, it's important to note that standard Buenos Aires-Montevideo tickets do not allow for stopovers, so separate tickets to Colonia must be purchased.
