Dear Colleagues and Friends,
On behalf of the organizing committee, I am glad to invite you to attend the V IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE2021). The conference will be held in a hybrid format (online AND in person) in the city of Guatemala, Guatemala, the “land of eternal spring”, located in Central America, south-east of Mexico, from March 14 to 17, 2021, at the headquarters of the Universidad Galileo.
EDUNINE is committed to hold EDUNINE 2021. Due to continued uncertainties surrounding the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, EDUNINE has made the decision to plan EDUNINE2021 from the start as a hybrid (online AND in-person) conference.
In March 2020, the EDUNINE Community (organizers and participants) weathered the storm and figured out how to hold the first-ever virtual EDUNINE conference a month after the COVID-19 outbreak cancelled the face-to-face event just before the start date. With their support, we are exploring potential approaches to enhance the virtual participation. EDUNINE2021 participants will have the option to choose whether to attend either as an “in-person attendee” or as a “online (virtual) only” attendee using the online platform. All participants will have access to the online platform.
For now, organizers and the host are cautiously optimistic that we will go forward with the face-to-face conference. All parts of the in-person event will be organized with the safety of participants and organizers as the highest priority. The Galileo University will be able to accommodate the Conference whatever the guidelines or recommendations in force on COVID or social distancing to enable production of a safe and successful in-person event. Certainly, if the pandemic continues and gets worse to the point where an in-person conference cannot occur, everyone could convert the in-person registration to an online-only. The conference will move forward as an online-only (virtual) conference.
While we hope that most participants will choose to join us in-person in Guatemala, we understand that health-related risks, financial strains, travel restrictions, and others lasting from the global pandemic may lead many to be unable to attend. The online option ensures access, equity, and inclusion of all participants.
Thanks to all EDUNINE2020 Virtual participants. You allowed us to work out a long list of what worked and what needs to be improved for the virtual event. We will inform you as decisions are made about conference´s platforms we will be using and some other details. We look forward to your support, ideas and feedback to improve the EDUNINE2021 Hybrid Conference.
The theme of this edition of the conference is The Future of Engineering Education: Current Challenges and Opportunities. Conferences on Education in Engineering, Technology, and Computing are more relevant than ever for bridging communities and helping educators and policymakers to find creative and innovative solutions as a response to teaching and learning in the present crisis and in the longer-term future.
IEEE World Conference in Engineering Education - EDUNINE is a unique and innovative international conference that favors the exchange of knowledge, experiences and is a meeting point for academics, professionals, researchers and students of education in Engineering, Technology, and Computing and related topics from Latin America and the rest of the world. The program of the conference covers the main issues that are presented in education today, among which stand out: the design and development of new learning environments, the use of new technologies and experiences, the motivation of students, the evaluation of learning and competences, intervention in the face of learning difficulties, etc.
We also invite authors to submit contributions that address the unprecedented disruption caused by COVID-19 on all aspects of higher education in our special tematic stream about Distance Education during this pandemic.
The IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education - EDUNINE will be held every year in a different Latin American city. It is an annual conference of the IEEE Education Society organized jointly with COPEC for Region 9 (Latin America). This conference is part of the renowned list of regional conferences of this Society that are: FIE (FRONTIERS IN EDUCATION, mainly in United States and Canada, Regions 1-7), EDUCON (GLOBAL ENGINEERING EDUCATION Conference, in Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Region 8), EDUNINE (Latin America, Region 9) and TALE (TEACHING ASSESSMENT AND LEARNING IN ENGINEERING, Asia and Oceania, Region 10).
The language of the papers for publication in the IEEE Xplore® digital library of IEEE is English for further international dissemination. The languages for the oral presentations of the papers in the sessions of the conference are English and also Portuguese and Spanish, corresponding to the most spoken languages in the Latin American region. The papers will be evaluated by peers based on originality, technical and/or research content/depth, correctness, relevance to conference, contributions, and readability.
Through a mix of workshops, special sessions, and parallel author oral presentation sessions, the four-day conference seeks to explore and to focus on the key challenges of the theme of the conference and disrupting times. Education in Engineering, Technology, and Computing becomes a multifaceted and complex phenomenon. Therefore, reflection on needs, challenges, paradigm shifts, innovations, and localized and contextualized experiences that shaped by specific academic cultures and education systems provides us a better understanding of the urgent demands of this new era. It is an ideal forum for sharing ideas, learning about developments and interacting with colleagues.
EDUNINE2021 Best Paper Awards are given to the best papers presented at the annual EDUNINE Conference, which will be nominated by reviewers, Technical Program and Awards Committees. Also, EDUNINE 2021 Recognition Awards and EDUNINE 2021 Meritorious Services Awards are given to members of the EDUNINE organization committees who distinguished themselves by outstanding meritorious achievement or service to this conference.
The organizers are proud to host this conference and we look forward to welcoming you to Guatemala for our traditional face-to-face event ( if public health recommendations allow) or virtual (online) event. Our goal is to maintain the same atmosphere and content in both the face-to-face version in our host institution and virtual in the homes of our participants. We look forward to welcoming you in person in Guatemala or online so that together we can enjoy the conference activities and, as always, offer the best opportunities to strengthen and create new networks among all participants.
